Lesson Topic 3: Research Reminders
The research process can be difficult, so you want to make sure that you follow each step carefully in order to prepare a well-written, well-supported essay. Each essay must include support, and the more support you have from various sources, the better your essay appears to the reader because they will believe your claims.
When you begin researching, follow the steps below:
- Write a thesis statement about your topic
- Follow the steps from Lesson 1
- Brainstorm about your thesis statement
- Remember the brainstorming tactics from the previous modules
- Find sources that support your thesis statement
- Use the primary source and secondary sources to find proof and support
- Read the sources for pieces of information that support your claims
- Select the lines from your sources that prove your thesis statement
The following website shows how to document Works Cited entries:
Notice that each source has a specific format and includes all of the publication information. The format provides a formula, and all you have to do is find the information to plug into the formula and create the Works Cited entry. The purpose of providing publication information (title, author, publication date, publishing company, etc.) is for the readers to find the source if they want more details or want to use the source.
