Lesson Topic 2: Word Parts

What is a Word Part?

A cartoon woman with light skin and brown hair sits atop a pencil as if she were sitting on a log. A thought bubble appears above her head containing a single question mark. Her face has a questioning expression on it. She is wearing a red long-sleeved dress with a skirt all the way to her shoes. Her dress is red with blue trim at the waist and skirt hem. Her shoes are red. Words are composed of various parts. The main part of a word is called the root word, and the root word is the base meaning of a word. For example, "port" is a root word. If you add a prefix, such as "ex," or a suffix, such as "-ed," to a root word, the word changes meaning.

Example:

Ex: out or out of

Port: to carry

Ex + Port = To carry out of

Understanding Prefixes and Suffixes

A word with a meaning you do not know can be broken down into smaller parts and analyzed by knowing roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Prefixes and suffixes add information to a word to change the meaning.
