Lesson Topic 3: Easy Organizing

What is Organization?

A cartoon man with light skin and red hair stares at a large piece of paper in his right hand with a confused look on his face. His eyes are crossed, his brow is furrowed, and he points to his left temple with his left index finger, puzzled at what he sees. He is wearing a green porkpie hat with a red sash, a turquoise short-sleeved shirt, an olive gray vest, khaki pants, and brown shoes. There is a large yellow question mark floating about his head. Most of the time, staying organized helps us know where to find the various items that we need. The same thing is true when you write an essay. If your essay is organized, the reader will know why each idea you have appears where you have placed it. Like we did with brainstorming, putting similar ideas together in a paragraph creates organization in an essay, and the essay will make more sense to the reader.

What is a Paragraph?

An essay is made up of several paragraphs. Paragraphs are groups of lines that share similar ideas. When we brainstormed, we created paragraphs with the groups of ideas we came up with.

Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence. The topic sentence tells what the whole paragraph will be about. Now, be careful not to confuse the thesis statement and the topic sentence.

Remember that the thesis statement tells the reader what the whole essay will be about, but the topic sentence tells the reader what a particular paragraph will be about.

Then, paragraphs need to include support and end with a conclusion sentence.

You will have a group of sentences that can go in the type of outline below to create a paragraph.

In this example, an outline is organized. It starts with the thesis, then body 1: topic, then state, then prove, then explain, then state, then prove, then explain, and finally, conclusion. There are spaces for the corresponding sentences for the writer to record in order to organize his or her thoughts.
