BAS: Lesson - Computer Vocabulary

Computer Vocabulary

Now that we can agree on what makes a computer a computer, let’s build our foundation with a few basic computer terms.

It is important when learning about any topic that we become familiar with the commonly used terminology/vocabulary about that topic.  In this lesson, let's identify some of the basic components that create the foundation for our amazing experiences working with computers. By knowing and utilizing commonly used terms, we ensure effective and efficient understanding when communicating and collaborating.

Below is a list of some of the basic components of the computer.

  • Hardware - the physical (touchable) parts of the computer
  • Motherboard - main circuit board of computer; makes everything in the computer work together
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU) - primary component that process computer instructions
  • Storage - any hardware that stores data (i.e. hard drive, USB, SD card)
  • RAM (Random Access Memory) - memory for active programs and system processes
  • ROM (Read Only Memory) - memory of hardwired instructions to boot up (start computer)
  • Software - computer programs
  • Ethernet - the standard way to connect computers on a network over a wired connection

The presentation below covers these terms with a few additional details. Be sure to click through each slide, taking notes on each component type.
