NIBI - Networks Interaction with Business and Industry Overview

Networks Interaction with Business and Industry

Introduction

Networks over the years have changed the way we share data, hardware devices, collaborate, and can be classified according to their size, geographic scope, physical topology, communication channel and other factors.

The network is the backbone of the IT evolution, and in the digital world, it plays an important role in connecting everything on the earth like equipment, machines, appliances, gadgets and moving objects.

Our focus this module will be to take a look at different ways networks interact in society today.

List of Lessons

Network Topologies

In this lesson you will learn about the physical arrangements of a networks’ connection.

Coverage Area

In this lesson we will take a look at different types of networks based on its geographical area (size).

Network Medium

In this lesson you will learn about ways in which we communicate both wired and wireless.

Key Terms

Network Topologies- physical layout of interconnection between the network devices.

Network- Two or more devices are connected to each other for purpose of communication.

Star Topology- Constructed from a central device, either a switch, router, or hub, which every other node in the network connects to.

Ring Topology-  constructed from a closed loop cable, known as a ring, that each node on the network connects to.

Bus Topology- constructed from a single cable, referred to as the bus, that each node on the network connects to.

Mesh Topology- a mesh of all the interconnected nodes; each node is connected to every other node through a single one-to-one communicating wire.

Tree Topology- a special type of network where many participants nodes are connected to form a tree type of architecture; bus and star topology.

Local Area Network (LAN)- a network that covers small areas like offices, schools, colleges or buildings.

Personal Area Network (PAN)- the smallest network used in personal spaces, such as Bluetooth.

Wide Area Network (WAN)- a network used in large geographical areas, such as countries or the Internet.
