HSC - Computer Set-Up Lesson

Computer Set-Up

Once you purchase your new computer, it is important that you set it up properly so it functions correctly and meets the ergonomic guidelines for a safe working environment.

Computer Maintenance and Clean-Up

There are tasks you can perform to maintain your hardware components.  The following preventive maintenance suggestions are just a few of the chores you can execute to limit computer repairs.

  • Use a cotton swab and a can of compressed air to remove dust and debris from your keyboard.
  • Avoid keeping sodas and food around your keyboard.
  • Shut down your computer before you clean the keyboard and monitor.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning your display screens.  The membrane covering many screens is delicate and can be easily damaged.
  • Set a schedule for backing up files.  Daily or weekly back-ups are suggested.
  • Run utilities such as Disk Defragmenter that ensure peak performance for your hard disk drive.
  • Scan your computer for viruses.
  • Apply the latest operating system, driver, and security updates.

Recycling Computer Parts

Keeping up with technology requires that you purchase a new computer every few years. If you are like most individuals, you tend to dump your old computer parts at your local dumpster or store the old parts in your attic. However, there are options available to you for discarding old computer parts.  Note the suggestions below:

  • Donate unwanted parts to your local school so students can practice tearing down and restoring a computer.
  • Send it back to the manufacturer.
  • Access the Earth911 Links to an external site. website to find a computer recycling center close to your home.
  • Locate a business that refurbishes and sells old computers.
