Story Summary

As we continue reading the story Caedes Intellecta, it is important to remind ourselves of what has happened previously and the events that we can expect to read about in the upcoming chapter. So, let's review and get ready for the next part of the story!

Story Notes - Caedes Intellecta: A murder understood

For several days after the wedding, Pseudolus heard nothing from Selene. Juba and his new bride had traveled to Numidia to visit his homeland and to see his father (Juba I). Pseudolus is filled with a great deal of apprehension. To pass the time, and to soothe his nerves, he wrote letters to Selene, though he never sent any of them - they never contained the right words.

He waited and paced, telling himself that Selene would be safe and that Juba would never hurt her. Perhaps he had misjudged the situation. Juba's anger could have been excused and Pseudolus himself may have missed something important in his investigation. But who would have done this? He searched his thoughts but could never arrive at an answer. Who might have hated Marcellus so? He could think of noone other than Juba: after all, Juba had found out that Marcellus loved Selene. But would that be enough to create hatred? Enough to cause Juba to murder his friend?

Selene and Juba will soon return to Rome. The young couple still has business in Rome. Is Selene well? Has she discovered anything new while traveling with Juba? What if Pseudolus has endangered his protégé by remaining silent?

All of this will be resolved in our final reading passage. If you have questions left after this passage, please contact your instructor, as they will be happy to discuss what happened and any concerns you have over the conclusion. Will Pseudolus finally determine who killed Marcellus?
