The future active participle is used when the action of the participle occurs after the action of the independent clause. The noun being modified is the performer of the action. The Future Active Participle is the formed using the 4th Principal Part. The future active participle is translated in English using the phrase about/going to _____. The student in this picture is going to ask a question.

Review: The Participle Stem

To be able to successfully form the Future Active Participle, we will need to use the participle stem, first seen when learning the perfect passive participle. It is formed by removing the -us ending from the 4th Principal Part. Example:

  • amo, amare, amavi, amatus
    • 4th PP = amatus
    • Participle stem: amatus - us = amat-

Formation

The future active participle is formed by adding the letters -ur to the Participle Stem, followed by 1st and 2nd declension adjective endings. Because it uses 1st/2nd declension endings, the masculine, feminine and neuter forms will all have their own forms. The future active participle has a dictionary entry with three forms: masculine (us), feminine (a), neuter (um) - all nominative singular. The remaining 1st/2nd declension endings will be added to the Future Participle Base (feminine form - a).

Example

  • amo, amare, amavi, amatus
    • Participle Stem: amat-
    • Add -ur to stem: amatur-
    • Add -us, -a, -um
      • amaturus, amatura, amaturum - about to love
  • Future Participle Base: amatura - a
    • amatur-
