5th Declension Nouns - Examples and Practice

Let's decline a few fifth declension nouns to review the general rules for noun formation. The basics: take the noun base and add your declension endings.

Example nouns:

  • dies, diei, m. - day
    • Base: di-
  • res, rei, f. - thing, matter
    • Base: r-

Other Fifth Declension Nouns

Reminder: other than res and dies, 5th declension nouns will always be singular, except for the nominative and accusative plural forms. Even though the plural forms were not used, you can still practice those endings on any 5th declension noun. If you are asked to decline a 5th declension noun as an exercise, please include all endings.

A typical 5th declension noun would be declined as follows, in terms of how you will see it used:
