Each section of the document discusses a major area that Rome controlled during Augustus' reign. Many people from these regions came to live in Rome and in particular, certain dignitaries sent their children to stay in the imperial house. For each region, note where some of the characters involved in our story came from.
Rome, at the time of the death of Marcellus (23 BCE), was a vast empire. People from all over the empire came to Rome to learn and to experience the grandeur of the great city. Several of the pupils in the imperial household came from distant lands like Asia Minor and northern Africa.
