Latin II: Introduction
Latin II Introduction
Salve! Welcome to Latin II!
Lingua Latina
Latin is called a "dead language" because it is no longer actively spoken by a group of native speakers. Because of this, Latin is a language that is a bit like a historical monument: it is set in time and unchanging. By studying a language like Latin, students can gain insights into their own language through comparison and learn about the people who used the language.
Dates
In this course, we use the dating method based on Common Era. Thus, you will see the following dating abbreviations consistently throughout the course:
- BCE = before common era (equivalent to B.C.)
- CE = common era (equivalent to A.D.)
Caedes Foedissima (A Murder Most Foul)
The Latin II course is designed around a central story-line to guide you through the lessons you will be learning. The main plot focuses on the death of a young man named Marcellus. His instructor, the Greek slave, Pseudolus, believes the death was unnatural and so investigates the cause of death and who might be responsible. As Pseudolus advances through the case and learns more about the circumstances surrounding Marcellus' death, you will be learning about Latin grammar and vocabulary, along with Roman culture and history.
