Nationalities and Occupations 

Introduction 

When you travel to China, the first question people may ask you would be "nǐ  shì nǎ guó rén？"  "你是哪国人？", which means "Where are you from?" This section will teach you the proper response to the question in Chinese, as well as how to find out the nationality of others in Chinese.  In the social status, if you know a person's occupation, that will help you to build the relationship.  You will also learn the proper way to ask and answer questions about someone's occupation.

Essential Questions

• How do you ask and tell someone's nationality?
• How do you ask and answer someone's occupation?
• How do you ask and tell where someone works?
• How do you express your interest in something?

If you want to ask someone about his nationality, you can say "Nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?你是哪国人？", or "Qǐng wèn ，nín shì nǎ guó rén请问，您是哪国人？", which is a more polite way. The proper response is "我是美国人wǒ shì měi guó rén" or "我是中国人wǒ shì zhōng guó rén。" . To express your thanks to others, you may say "Xiè xiè谢谢". In order to build the relationship, you'd better know the occupation of certain people, in this occasion, you may ask"Qǐng wèn ，nǐ zuò shén me gōng zuò请问，你做什么工作？" or "Qǐng wèn ，nín zài nǎ er gōng zuò？请问，您在哪儿工作？. The answers can be "Wǒ shì yì míng yī shēng /jì zhě /lǎo shī 。我是一名医生/记者/老师。", or "Wǒ zài yī yuàn /bào shè /dà xué gōng zuò 。我在医院/报社/大学工作。"To show your interest in something you could say "Wǒ xǐ huān……我喜欢……".
