Typing in Chinese

Windows:

To type text on your computer in Chinese, please follow these steps:

  1. Add Chinese as an input language. First, open Regional and Language Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then clicking Region and Language.
  2. Click the Keyboards and Languages tab, and then click Change keyboards.
  3. Under Installed services, click Add.
  4. Double-click Chinese (Simplified, PRC), double-click Keyboard, select Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin New Experience Input and then click OK.

 

Mac:

To type text on your computer in Chinese, please follow these steps:

  1. First, click the Apple icon on the top left corner of your desktop, and then clicking System Preferences, and then select Language & Text.
  2. Make sure the Input Sources tab is selected, and then scroll down until you find " Chinese - Simplified ".
  3. Make sure " Show Input menu in menu bar " is checked (near the bottom of the window), so you can see which input method (Pinyin) is currently selected by looking at the menu bar.

The Basic Rules of Chinese Typing

Type the Pinyin, and then select the appropriate character.

For example, if you would like to type the word " 你好 (Hello)", you need to type "nihao" first and then select the corresponding characters " 你好 ".
