GAR: Overview

Have you ever grown something? Have you or someone you know ever had a garden where they grew their own fresh vegetables? Agriculture is big business in both Germany and Georgia. While most agriculture is industrial in nature, many people in both Germany and Georgia also have residential gardens that they grow and enjoy. In this unit, we will become familiar with the terminology of a basic garden and we will examine the differences between German and American citizens and how they grow their gardens and what plants they grow. Differences in climate will be discussed between the two countries and how this affects the major crops grown there. In this unit, you will also learn how to use the verb 'würden' to express what you would have done and review all the tenses you have learned so far. Finally, you will learn key descriptive vocabulary in German for describing agriculture and use it to be able to describe individual plants and compare and contrast agriculture in Germany and in Georgia and the U.S.

Goal Statement

You will begin by exploring the key vocabulary related to the garden in German. In our cultural moment, we will examine the national anthem of Germany. We will learn what a 'Schrebergarten' is, its history, and what role they play in German society. We will also learn some differences between the agriculture of Georgia and the U.S. and that of Germany. We will review the tenses we have learned so far and examine the use of the verb 'würden'.
