Examples and Practice Activities

Let's apply what we've learned so far.

Examples

Example Set 1 - Noun Identification: Beispiele Sätze. Können Sie die Fälle erkennen?

  • Ich liebe mein neues Auto.
    • Accusative: Auto is the direct object.
  • Das grosse Auto ist sehr schnell.
    • Nominative: Auto is the subject.
  • Wo ist mein blaues Auto?
    • Nominative: Auto follows ist, making it the predicate nominative.
  • Ich kaufe es für mein Auto.
    • Accusative: Auto follows the preposition für, which takes the accusative.
  • Ich werde meiner Frau ein Auto kaufen.
    • Dative: Frau is the indirect object.
  • Was machst du mit dem Auto?
    • Dative: Auto follows the prepositions mit, which takes the dative.

Example 2 - the three steps

Look at this sentence:

  • Ich sehe das gross_____ Auto.
  • Meaning: I see the big car.

Remember the Steps:

  • Step 1: Is Auto Nominative, Accusative or Dative?
    • Accusative: Auto is the direct object of sehe.
  • Step 2: Is Auto definite or indefinite?
    • Definite: a definite article is used with this noun (das...Auto)
  • Step 3: Is Auto masculine, feminine or neuter?
    • Neuter: the noun uses the definite article das

Recall the chart connecting articles to adjective endings.

  • Look in the accusative column, in the definite article section. For a das word the ending is: -e.

Thus the answer is: Ich sehe das grosse Auto.
