German Adjectives - The Three Steps

Um die richtige Adjektivendung zu finden, muss man sich nur an drei Schritte erinnern:

  1. Ist das Hauptwort, dass das Adjektiv beschreibt, Nominativ, Akkusativ oder Dativ? (Schritt Eins)
  2. Ist es ein bestimmter Artikel? (der,die or das) Oder ein unbestimmter Artikel? (ein, dein, mein, sein, etc..)  (Schritt Zwei)
  3. Ist das Wort, dass das Adjektiv beschreibt, ein 'der', 'die' oder 'das' Wort?  (Schritt Drei)

Step One - What case?

Using the following information to determine what case the noun belongs to. A noun is:

  • Nominative, if:
    • it is the subject of a sentence
    • it comes after a form of sein (bin, bist, ist, sind, seid)
      • This is called the predicate nominative
  • Accusative, if:
    • it is the direct object
      • The direct object answer the question Who/what receives the action of the verb?
    • it follows the prepositions: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um
  • Dative, if:
    • it is the indirect object
      • The indirect object answer the question To whom? or For whom?
    • it follows the prepositions: aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu

Step Two - Definite or Indefinite or No Article?

Review the following chart concerning definite (der, die, das) and indefinite articles (ein, dein, mein, sein, etc.). After each article, the adjective ending used is listed. The last block shows if there is no article, what the adjective ending is for these forms. The articles are listed in the order: Masculine, Feminine, Neuter, Plural (if available).

Step Three - Gender?

Recall that every noun has an assigned gender. So, ask the following question about the noun in question:

  • Is it 'der', 'die', or 'das'?

In other words: is the noun masculine, feminine, or neuter?
