Research on Physical Activity & Health Risk Factors

Introduction

Health Risk Factors
There are nine health risk factors associated with heart disease, disability, & premature death.
Uncontrollable Factors: age, gender, hereditary (you can inherit your relatives' tendencies to develop some of the same diseases)
Controllable Factors: inactivity (caused by lack of muscle stimulation & is largely the result of technology), stress & tension([unnecessary stress & tension can place a strain on the heart.), high blood pressure (caused by stress and tension), obesity, smoking,
high levels of cholesterol (cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance found in cells. When too much cholesterol builds, it can cause blockages)

Surgeon General's Report

Many people are excited about fitness programs and having an active lifestyle; however, research shows that a large percentage of adults are not very fit and many are obese. In 1996, the Surgeon General published a Report on Physical Activity and Health. This was the first report to emphasize the importance of physical fitness and the quality of life.

In this lesson, we will look at the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health and current research that has been completed. We will also examine health risk factors and how you can change your current health, as well as, the state of your future health.

Reflection

There has been much research about the importance of physical activity in one’s everyday life. But why do people still choose to be inactive? How is your current activity level? What health risk factors do you think might be a problem for you in 10 years?

What Is Your Takeaway?
