JBR - The Judicial Branch Project
- Due No Due Date
- Points 100
Create a Power Point Presentation
For this project you will need to create a PowerPoint presentation after researching the ten Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) cases. You will also need to provide a Works Cited page. Use the insight on this page, and the rubric found at the bottom of this page to complete your project.
SCOTUS Cases
- Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission
- Cox v. New Hampshire
- Elonis v. U.S.
- Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier
- McCulloch v. Maryland
- McDonald v. Chicago
- Morse v. Frederick
- New York Times Co v. United States
- Shaw v. Reno
- Texas v. Johnson
You will include the following information for each case:
- Background of the Case (What was the original dispute?)
- Ruling / Outcome (Decision) (The Supreme Court ruled in favor of...)
- Impact of Case on American Society (What changed as a result of the ruling?)
Include images or graphics that provide additional information that supports the relevance of each case.
You must include analysis.
- With your research and findings, justify which case is the most important of the SCOTUS cases in this project. (While this is an opinion question, you are answering it based on your findings. For academic writing, you would not use the phrase, "In my opinion, ..." Instead you would get right to the analysis by state your claim and reason.
- Discuss which case you found the most intriguing and why. Again, get right to your analysis without phrases such as, "I feel... or I found..."
Create a Bibliography (Work Cited) page.
- MLA - 12-point font in a legible font like Times New Roman, double spaced
- Save your Work Cited page with your Name on it.
- Submit it with your PPT.
Use a MLA citation guide to cite your sources. You can use information from the content pages and reputable internet resources for your research. You will need to cite all information appropriately. Include the citations in your finished file.
For Works Cited, find examples and information from the MLA lesson in your course or by searching Purdue Owl - Online Writing Lab - MLA General Format.
PPT Setup Example:
- Title Slide with project name and student name
- For each SCOTUS case create (one slide) for Information and (one slide) Graphic/Image. 2 slides for each SCOTUS case. (20 total slides)
- Create 1-2 slides for your Analysis
Scoring Guideline
Each case worth 8 pts. x 10 cases = 80 pts. (6 pts. for information and 2 pts. for image)
Analysis - 10 pts.
Work Cited page worth 10 pts.
Submit your completed project when you are finished.
See the Scoring Rubric below for grading insight.
