AOD - Illegal Drugs (Lesson)
Illegal Drugs
We will learn about illegal drugs and the effects on the body and strategies for avoiding the use of illegal drugs. Using illegal drugs is a high-risk behavior. Drug abuse poses risks to physical, mental/emotional, and social health. Marijuana is a gateway drug that itself is dangerous and illegal. Psychoactive drugs – which include stimulants, depressants, opiates, and hallucinogens – affect the central nervous system and alter activity in the brain.
Think through what your “yes” and "no” responses would be to the following statements:
- I understand the health effects of using illegal substances.
- I recognize that peers may try to influence me to use drugs, and I know how to resist that peer pressure.
- I choose to live drug-free.
- I recognize that dangers of driving with someone who has used drugs.
- I choose to advocate for a drug-free life.
How many of these statements accurately describe your own personal choices? The more you resonated with, the healthier your lifestyle.
