Steps for Decision Making
State the Problem:
Meaning: Why am I in this situation? Who is involved? How much time do I have to decide?
Example: The decision to be made is: go on a vacation with a friend or save for a car. I really want to go on vacation with my friend but I also really want to buy a car. Ultimately, I need to decide soon because my friend's family will need to account for me in their travel and vacation plans.
List the possible choices:
1. Go on vacation with my friend and his/her family
2. Not go on vacation with my friend, instead to save the money I've worked hard to earn for a car.
Consider the consequences:
Meaning: What are potential consequences to the above possible choices? What are my personal values, family's values, religious values, morals, and legal values?

Example: Potential consequences of going on vacation with my friend's family include spending the money I have worked hard to save for a car. In addition, I would need to work extra hours to not only make the amount of money I currently do while working, but also make a little extra money to try and re coop the money I spent while on vacation.
The potential consequences for choosing to stay home rather than go on vacation are upsetting my friend for not taking him/her up on the offer, as well as missing out on the fun and excitement of a vacation.

Decide and act on it
Meaning: A final decision is made at this point based on the considerations above
Example: A decision is made to go on the vacation or save for the car.

Evaluate your decision
Meaning: *This is the most important step of all five because if you're pleased with your decision you will probably repeat this decision in the future or if you're not pleased you will rethink some of the above information and make a different choice if ever faced with this decision again!

Example: What was the outcome? Did my decision affect others? Did my decision affect my self-esteem? Would I make the same decision again?
