IE - Georgia's Role in the World Economy Lesson
Georgia and the World Economy
Have you heard of “Yallywood?” It may sound silly, but Georgia's position as one of the prime destinations for Hollywood production is anything but silly. Popular Marvel movies like Avengers: Endgame, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 were all filmed in Georgia. Film and television production may be the most exciting aspect of Georgia’s role in the world economy, but it is not the only part we play in the world economy.
Ports of Savannah and Brunswick
Georgia has one of the busiest ports on the east coast of the United States. The port of Savannah was the 4th busiest on both coasts in 2021. Why? It is the largest single container terminal in North America, handles 40 percent of the U.S. packaged poultry exports, creates 350,000 jobs, and does $66 billion in annual sales. Surprisingly, furniture is the port’s largest import. All of these numbers are likely to increase with the 2022 completion of the deepening of the 40-mile Savannah River shipping channel. The Port of Brunswick is the nation's second busiest port for import and export Roll-on/Rolloff cargo. The planned 104-acre Northeast Georgia Inland Port will provide a direct link to the Port of Savannah via Norfolk Southern Railway.
Multinational Corporations
Multinational corporations are corporations that do business in at least two different countries. Georgia is the home to numerous multinational corporations like the Coca-Cola Company and Delta Air Lines; the Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, is the biggest corporation in the state of Georgia in 2022. International corporations like Adidas, Porsche, and KIA Motors are all located in Georgia as well. The United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands are the top five countries with facilities in Georgia.
Impact of Trade on the State’s Economy
As of 2020, Georgia ranked among the top 10 exporting states in the U.S. for the first time. As of 2022, Georgia's main exports are metals, motor cars, nuts, fertilizers, wine and mineral water. Georgia's main export partners are Turkey, Azerbaijan, Canada, Armenia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and the United States. Georgia's main imports are oil, motor cars, pharmaceutical products, wheat and meslin, sugar and electrical equipment. Georgia's main import partners are Turkey, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Germany, Russia, and China. Georgia set a record for exports of $42.36 billion in 2021.
