Gallaudet University

Located in Washington, DC, Gallaudet University is a federally chartered private and premier university for the deaf and hard of hearing.  

Interesting Facts about Gallaudet

  • Gallaudet is the "Mecca" of the Deaf culture.
  • The charter was signed into existence by Abraham Lincoln in 1864.  
  • It is the only liberal arts college in the world exclusively devoted to deaf students.
  • Only a small group of hearing students who are majoring in deaf related fields are admitted to the school. 
  • The football huddle began at Gallaudet.
  • The school mascot is the Bison. 
  • The school song is the Bison Song. 
  • The school colors are Buff and Blue. This is also the name of the school newspaper.

National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID)

Located in Rochester, New York, NTID is part of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). 

  • NTID is the first and largest technological college in the world for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • It was created by Public Law 89-36, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Act, that was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 and opened in 1968.
  • RIT/NTID serves more than 1,100 deaf and hard-of-hearing students from around the United States.
  • NTID's mascot is RITchie the Tiger
