When referencing a person, use the following strategies:

If a person is present or visible -

  • Raise your eyebrows and sign “SEE” in the person's direction.
  • Then use the rule of describing stated above. After giving the description, use your index finger to point at the person while keeping your arm slightly bent.
  • Keep your eyebrows raised through the entire description until your listener confirms that they know who you are describing.
  • After the listener confirms that they know who you are referring to, you can nod to affirm that you are both speaking about the same person.
  • Sometimes the listener may add to the description of the person to confirm that you are both speaking about the same person. In this case, you will need to affirm or correct the additional information.

If the person is not present -

  • Raised eyebrows and sign “KNOW”.  Then use the rules for describing a person and indicate where the person might have seen them last or know them from.
