Telling Age

Age Spot, Age, Old, How Old....? Video

There are 2 options for signing age in ASL.

Option 1

Sign OLD + a number.  The sign for OLD indicates "years old" and comes before the number, not after it.

Option 2

Place a number signed at the Age Spot (the chin), then move the hand shape away from the chin in one movement. Moving the number away from the Age Spot conveys the meaning "years old" so you do not need to add separate signs for year and old after the number.

Remember when signing age, unlike signing counting numbers, numbers 1 - 5 are signed palm out.

When signing “How old are you?” use your WH-Face and sign “OLD++”.

(Note:  ++ is used to indicate sign movements that are repeated or to show a reoccurring action.)
