FAM - Deaf Children in Hearing Homes (Lesson)
Deaf Children in Hearing Homes
- More than 90 percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents.
- Typically, these parents have never met a deaf person or had any exposure to American Sign Language before the birth of their deaf child.
- A very high percentage of these parents will NEVER learn sign language well enough to effectively communicate with their deaf child.
- If a parent does learn sign language, it is typically the mother.
- Fathers, especially, will not learn much more than basic commands such as “stop,” “come,” “yes,” “no,” “drink,” “play” and “eat.”
