Imperatives

Imperatives or commands tell the addressee to do something.

Examples of imperative sentences in English are:

  • Go to your room!
  • Sit down and eat!
  • Clean that up!

The command in ASL includes:

  • Possible frowning.
  • Absence of the subject.
  • Direct eye gaze at addressee. (The subject is indicated through eye contact.)
  • Sharp, tense movement of the verb or a slow, deliberate movement of the verb to show even more emphasis.
  • Sometimes a sentence can be signed with just the verb.
  • Examples: GO, SIT DOWN, or FINISH (Stop That!)
