FEE - Non-Manual Markers (Lesson)
Non-Manual Markers
As discussed in the previous module, Non-Manual Markers (NMM)/Non-Manual Signals (NMS) in American Sign Language provide crucial grammatical context to manual signs. Without NMMs, the signs themselves cannot be used to construct comprehensible ASL sentences.
Here are some non-manual markers you will see in American Sign Language:
- Head nods
- Raised eyebrows
- Tilted head
- Pursed lips
- Eye shifts
- Eye gazes
- Facial expressions (smile, anger, frown, puzzled look, etc)
- Body shifts/movements.
