GRE - Attention-Getting (Lesson)
Attention-Getting
Getting the attention of a deaf person is different from the way you may interact with hearing people.
Typically, strategies used to attract the attention of a deaf person include: waving your hand or tapping on the shoulder or upper arm of the deaf person, if you are close by; lightly tapping a table where someone is sitting; asking a person nearby to tap on the shoulder or upper arm of the deaf person. There are occasions when one might stomp on the ground or flash lights, but those are reserved for use by Deaf people or those who are very familiar with the cultural norms of the Deaf community. You should not stomp or flash lights. Shouting at the Deaf person or throwing an object at them is never acceptable.
