TO BE Verb Lesson

In ASL, the verb TO BE is not explicitly signed.

One way that the TO BE verb can be indicated is by pointing.

  • Using the index finger to point
  • If a person or object is visible, point to them
  • If a person or object is not visible, point to an empty space and continue signing
  • It is not considered rude or impolite; it is a part of the language and culture

When you point, look toward the area you were pointing to. This is called eye gaze, and it helps hold that location for the person or thing you were talking about.
