Key Terms

    1. Ideation - The formation of ideas or concepts.
    2. Brainstorm - A process for stimulating the creative production of ideas. A good way to begin a brainstorm is just to begin with a list based on a single word or idea.
    3. Focused Brainstorm - With a focused brainstorm, you select a word from a brainstorm list and write a list of statements that are led by the brainstorm idea.
    4. Mind Map - A diagram used to visually organize information. A mind map is hierarchical and shows relationships among pieces of the whole.
    5. Visualization Map - Turning ideas and concepts into visual imagery.
    6. Imitationalism - Refers to art that focuses on things being realistically represented. It is a theory of art that judges artwork based on how real it looks.
    7. Emotionalism - An aesthetic and critical theory of art which places emphasis on the expressive qualities. According to this theory, the most important thing about a work of art is the vivid communication of moods, feelings, and ideas.
    8. Formalism - Describes the critical position that the most important aspect of a work of art is its form – the way it is made and its purely visual aspects.

Module Lessons Preview

In this module, we will study the following topics:

Artist Focus: We will look deeper into what inspires several of our focus artists from earlier modules.

How Do You Find Inspiration?: We will look at how some art students have found inspiration to create their own artworks.

Brainstorming an Idea: We will explore how you can take an idea and turn it into a brainstorm list that can lead to finished artworks.

From Brainstorm to Mind Map: As visual artists, we need to create a list into something more visual. We will learn how to adapt our focused brainstorm into a mind map.

Ideation Journal:  For this journal, you will submit a brainstorm list, a mind map, and visualization page of your own idea or concept.

Discussion: From Idea to Media: Once you know what you want to create, you need to decide on media. Media can give your work more meaning.

Portfolio Review Project: You will review your online portfolio and reflect on what you have learned. You will also consider techniques that you can use to help to create your big idea from your mind map and visualization.
