- Shape - 2D area defined in some way.
- Color - Reflected light.
- Rhythm - Movement by repetition of elements or objects.
- Pattern - Decorative surface design.
- Emphasis - Part of a work dominant over another.
- Abstraction - Any art in which the depiction of real objects in nature has been subordinated or entirely discarded, and whose aesthetic content is expressed in a formal pattern or structure of shapes, lines, and colors.
- Non-Objective Art - Artworks having no recognizable subject matter (not recognizable as such things as houses, trees, people, etc). Also known as non-representational art.
- Formalism - An aesthetic and critical theory of art that places emphasis on form or structural qualities instead of either content or contextual qualities. According to this point of view, the most important thing about a work of art is the effective organization of the elements of art by using the principles of design.
- Stencil - Stiff paper (or other sheet material) with a design cut into it as a template for shapes meant to be copied.
- Formalism - An aesthetic and critical theory of art that places emphasis on the form-- the structural qualities instead of either content (sometimes called literal or allegorical qualities) or contextual qualities.
Module Lessons Preview
In this module, we will study the following topics:
Artist Focus: For this module, our focus artist is a Georgia-born artist who works in abstraction with pattern and rhythm-- Jasper Johns.
Abstract and Non-Objective Artworks: Learning the evolution of non-objective and abstraction will help you understand how to design your own artwork.
Pattern, Rhythm, and Focal Points: For this artwork, you are designing within the picture plane using principles of design. It is important to review these for this module.
Pattern and Rhythm in Drawing Quiz: Demonstrate your understanding of the concepts presented so far for this module.
Module Journal Directions: For this journal, you will need to learn about color pencils and how to use layering and burnishing. You will also need to be able to make your own stencils.
Journal: Pattern and Rhythm: In your journal, you will design a pattern page and a rhythm page using color pencil techniques and watercolor.
Beginning the Guided Module Project: You will follow the written directions to create your own abstract or non-objective artwork. You will begin the first layer of three.
Project Layer 1 Check-In: Upload an image of your layer #1 for your teacher to give you advice for moving forward.
Guided Layer 2 Module Project: Follow guided directions for layer 2 of your project.
Discussion - Critique In-Progress Project: Upload an image of your project in progress. You will critique your work and give advice to two other students.
Project: Completed Module Project: Using the advice from your classmates, complete your 3rd guided layer and submit your completed module project following the objectives.
