FD - Introduction to Gesture Drawing (Lesson)

Introduction to Gesture Drawing

We will begin gesture drawing by loosening up your drawing. One approach is to scribble gesture. This technique will prevent you from using contour line and force you to think in terms of shapes.

View the presentation below to learn more about scribble gesture. Be sure your volume is turned on!

Gesture Practice

In the following activities in this module, you will create a series of practice drawings. Make sure you take a quality photo of the 5 scribble drawings so you can post those to that assignment.

Master the scribble gesture through 5 timed drawings:
Find 2-3 objects that are more 3D than 2D
Draw the object from different directions when you repeat the drawing
Don’t reuse an object more than once
Supplies: Journal, black pen (so you can’t erase)
Write the beginning and ending time on the paper.
Set a timer for 2 minutes for each drawing
Draw the entire time!!!
Begin in the center and work your way to the outside
Focus on capturing the proportion and mass of the object
