Perspective of Shadows Module Overview

Introduction

View the following presentation to get an overview of what you will be learning in this module.

Key Terms

    1. Line - Path of a point moving through space.
    2. Shape - 2D area defined in some way.
    3. Form - Object having 3 dimensions.
    4. Value - Darkness or lightness of an object.
    5. Texture - How something feels or looks as if it feels.
    6. Space - The area around, between, above, below or within objects.
    7. Balance - Equalizing visual elements.
    8. Proportion - Concern with size relationships with one part to another.
    9. Symmetry - That the viewer should not be given the impression that something is out of balance, or missing, or wrong.
    10. Figure and Ground - Which happens when you use shading or size to change the brain’s perception. Silhouettes and complex relationships are an example of how our brains create order in chaos.
    11. Converging Lines - When parallel lines recede (move away from you), they appear to move closer together (converge) toward the horizon line.
    12. Linear Perspective - A graphic system that creates the illusion of depth through lines converging at specific points.
    13. One Point Perspective - All lines converge at 1 point.
    14. Two Point Perspective - Different lines meet at different points.
    15. Horizon Line - Line parallel to the horizon. This line is flat and parallel to the bottom of the paper.
    16. Vanishing Point - Point on the horizon line where receding parallel lines meet.
    17. Parallel Lines - Lines that are always the same distance apart (called "equidistant"), and will never meet.

Module Lessons Preview

In this module, we will study the following topics:

Artist Focus: Though Betye Saar is primarily a sculptor, we will look at how she also incorporates shadows into her sculptural pieces.

1-PT and 2-PT Perspective Review: Review linear perspective from Drawing 1 as you create 1-pt and 1-pt open boxes.

Expressing Light and Shadow through Value: Learn the drawing vocabulary for light and shadow.

Practice Perspective: Put the practice and experiments to use as you create 1-pt and 2-pt boxes with open lids lying on their sides.

Journal-Negative Space: For your module journal assignment, you will get a deeper understanding of negative space. You will learn how to draw using only negative and will activate the negative space.

Still Life with Shadows Project: Apply your experimentations with the egg value study and create a value drawing of 3 or more objects using a strong light source to create shadows.

Discussion of Project and Journal:  After working with very calculated values and graphite shading, you will discuss compare what you have learned through your negative space journal and your still life shadow drawing.
