UV - Expressing Light and Shadow Through Value (Lesson)

Expressing Light and Shadow Through Value

To understand how to create a form on a 2-D surface, you have to understand how to use value to trick the viewer into believing the object is 3-dimensional. Studying light and how it moves across a form is part of the process of creating a realistic value drawing.

You should be able to identify the part of a shadow as it moves across an object and the parts of the shadow that it casts.

Please watch the presentation below to learn more about light and value shadow. Be sure your volume is turned up!

The following image helps to understand light and shadow, showing the concepts of highlight, terminator, and occlusion shadows.
