UV - Value Scales and Texture Exercises (Lesson)
Value Scales and Texture Exercises
Artists experiment and refine their craft through exercises. By testing and manipulating the media, we can investigate the limits of our tools and can find ways to push those tools to create art.
Understanding your media - how it is made and how to take care of it - gives you confidence and helps you to push the boundaries of your media. If you have never really thought about how your pencils are made, this is a great video about pencil manufacturing. Links to an external site.
You will need to learn how to care for your materials. For this module, you will need the following supplies:
- Graphite pencils, 2H, HB, 2B, 5B
- Graphite stick
- Vinyl eraser
- Kneaded rubber eraser
Please watch the following video to learn more about graphite tools. Be sure that your volume is turned on!
Next, put your materials through a few experiments, value scales, and texture exercises. Value scales are a way for you to see the range of value a pencil can make. By creating value scales side-by-side, you are able to see the different values that our drawing pencils can make. Please view the following presentation to learn more about value scales. Be sure your volume is turned on!
