Composing a Still Life For a Drawing

Create Compelling Compositions For Your Three Drawings

Now that you have practiced with your media and have worked on your eye-hand coordination, you must find the best composition for your three drawings for this module. This presentation will provide you with the tools you need to compose your drawings.

Let’s look at how drawing has been used as a method of communication and thinking. Drawing is a primary method of communication. As small children, we draw before we write and create symbols based on our environment. As you work your way through this microlesson, think about how you already use drawing to communicate and how drawing reflects your process of thinking and observation.

Please watch the presentation below to learn more about the rules for composing a still life. Be sure your volume is turned up!

Composing For Your Project

Find 3-4 objects with a common purpose for your still life composition.

  • Objects should be in varying heights.
  • Make sure you have a white or neutral location for these objects and a light source.
  • You will need to be able to draw while observing your objects.
  • Don't forget after you have drawn each contour drawing you will need to take a non-skewed photo of the still life for grading purposes.
