Purpose of Journaling Module Overview

Introduction

So happy to have you join our Drawing 2 course! This course is a continuation of the work you completed in Drawing 1, enhancing skills and techniques while also providing exploration of drawing media. Your basic drawing skills and your critical analysis skills for responding to master drawings will be reinforced from Drawing 1. We will examine solutions to drawing problems through student drawings and those of other artists.

Key Terms

    1. Shape - An element of art that has a two-dimensional area that is defined in some way.
    2. Line - An element of art that is a path of a moving point through space.
    3. Texture - An element of art that refers to how things feel or look as if they feel.
    4. Form - An element of art that is a three-dimensional object, having height, width, and depth.
    5. Value - An element of art that describes the lightness or darkness of an object.
    6. Space - An element of art concerning the area between, around, above, below, or within objects.
    7. Color - An element of art that is derived from reflected light.
    8. Rhythm - A principle of design that indicates movement through the repetition of elements or objects.
    9. Pattern - A principle of design with a decorative surface design of repeated elements.
    10. Movement - A principle that creates the look and feel of action.
    11. Variety - A principle of design concerning different and contrasting elements.
    12. Proportion - A principle of design concerning size relationships of one part to another.
    13. Harmony/Unity - A principle of design stressing the similarities of separate but related parts.
    14. Emphasis - A principle of design. One part of an artwork that is dominant over another.
    15. Balance - A principle of design concerning equalizing visual forces or elements.
    16. Organic/Freeform - An irregular form often found in nature.
    17. Symmetrical Balance - The type of balance where objects are the same on either side of a vertical axis.
    18. Elements of Art - The elements of art are line, shape, form, texture, value, color, and space.
    19. Principles of Art - The principles of art are guidelines for organizing the elements to create good design.
    20. Ideation -  When an artist creates a journal page based on an idea. These pages tend to have both text and images. The text and image are equally important. 
    21. Diary/Record - When an artist creates a journal page based on an event or place visited. These pages tend to have both text and images, but the images are more important than the written text and usually guide the text.
    22. Expressive Pages - When an artist creates a journal page that is based on an emotion or feeling. These pages tend to be based primarily on imagery and have some text, but the image is the most important part of these pages and the text tends to be minimal.

In this module, we will study the following topics:

Review the Elements of Art - Since all art begins with the Elements of Art, we review the building blocks of art. 

Review the Principles of Art - So you fully understand how artworks are created, you must review the principles of design. Organizing the elements into principles of design is how we create art.

History and Purpose of Journaling- You will study journal pages of three famous artists to discover three different reasons that artists use journals as a part of the artist process.
