Introduction to Improv Guessing Games and Skill Games

Guessing Games

As mentioned in the previous lesson, the reason theatre games and improvisation are so critical for the development of skills in theatrical performance is that the effect of live dynamic audience interaction with all forms of theatrical performance is made clear nowhere more than through the exploration of improvisation. In improvisation, the performers and the audience absolutely depend on one another. For the performer, the understanding of objectives and tactics, inherent in daily communication with others, as well as problem-solving and positive teamwork are focal points of Improvisational Theatre. In this section, you will gain an understanding of the rules and structure of improvisational theatre, theatre games, professional applications, and team-based collaborations for the creation of live theatre. The specific focus of this section of the lesson is on Guessing Games. These are improv games in which players need to guess something. These kinds of games are sometimes referred to as 'naive' games.

Skill Games

In this section, you will gain an understanding of the rules and structure of improvisational theatre, theatre games, professional applications, and team-based collaborations for the creation of live theatre. The specific focus of this section of the lesson is on Skill Games. These are improv games in which players must follow a challenging set of parameters while also maintaining the basic rules of improv with a partner.
