COS - Big Bang Theory LESSON
Big Bang Theory
The word cosmology simply means that we use the scientific method to try to understand how our universe was formed, how it has changed over time, and what will eventually happen to it. The Big Bang Theory is our best explanation based on the data currently available.
According to the Big Bang Theory, and the best evidence we currently have, nothing existed until the moment that the singularity came into existence. Singularities are thought to also exist at the center of black holes. These are areas where the density of matter is infinite.
Until the moment the universe came into existence, there would have been nothing to record or measure. Due to the name of the theory, people think there was a huge explosion. What we really have is a rapid expansion of the singularity that began 13.7 billion years ago and continues to occur today. The singularity cannot have been a fireball in space, there was nothing, not even empty space. The concept of time and dimensions are a part of what came from the singularity. That is something very hard for people to grasp. We cannot imagine a situation without space or time.
The Big Bang Theory is just that, a theory. It is based on many complex observations. There is evidence that the universe had a beginning that we can trace back to 13.7 billion years ago. The galaxies are moving apart, so the universe is expanding. The evidence of cosmic radiation shows that the universe was much hotter at one time. The abundance of Hydrogen and Helium are consistent with what scientists think the universe was like at the beginning of time.
