Tides

Earth's only natural satellite - the Moon - has an effect on the Earth's oceans. Because of the gravitational pull of the Moon, we have tides. Tides are simply the alternate rising and falling of the sea level twice approximately every 23 hours. This is due to the rotation of the Earth and Moon.

It is easy to see in the picture below how high tide and low tide can affect an area on land. In the Low Tide image below, you can see more land showing because the water level has dropped in that area. However, in the High Tide image below, you can see that the sea level has risen and portions of the land are now underwater.
