Technological Advances

Hubble telescopeAstronomers and scientists have made many technological advances that have aided in the study of Astronomy. The Hubble Telescope is just one of the many technological advances that have brought profound changes to what we know today. The Hubble Space telescope was first launched in 1990 and has been orbiting earth ever since. Because of its location above our planet's atmosphere, this telescope is able to get images that we would not be able to see here on earth. Since its launch, this basic reflector telescope has taken hundreds of thousands of images and sent them back to NASA. These images have led to the discovery and insight of many great mysteries including dark energy, quasars, and even the age of the universe.

This now famous telescope was named after Edwin Hubble who helped prove that the universe was expanding.

The SETI Institute is another great advancement in space research that has more recently come into play. SETI stands for: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and they aim at seeking life in the universe. While SETI technically got its start back in 1959, it was not until the 1960's that research started for SETI. Frank Drake was a radio astronomer and he began by searching for microwave radio signals from other solar systems. Then in the 1970's, more astronomers joined forces and conducted similar research. Through the use of radio telescopes, researchers constantly are recording and searching for life in distant places.

Through the use of radio telescopes, SETI scientists search for life in the universe!
