Spectroscopy
Spectroscopy is an object's light broken down into its different colors. Astronomers look at the colors of an object's light and analyze it to infer physical properties of that object. They are then able to gather information about temperature, mass, luminosity, and composition of the objects they study.
Before astronomers can use spectroscopy to gather inferences about objects in space, they must understand characteristics of light.
