Isaac Newton was born in England in 1642. He was interested in physics, astronomy, optics, and mathematics. Stories tell of an apple falling from a tree in his garden that led him to understand the force of gravity. No one really knows how the story goes though. Nonetheless, this eventually led Newton to discover the three laws of motion.

  1. The first law states that an object will move at the same velocity unless an outside force acts upon it. For example, an apple sitting on the table will remain on the table until a force (the push of your hand) acts upon it, or an object will remain in motion until a force acts upon it. For example, a ball will continue to roll on the ground until it either hits another object or friction causes it to stop.
  2. The second law states that the force acting on an object is equal to the object's mass times the acceleration it undergoes.
  3. The third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
