Ancient Civilizations

Since the beginning of time, people have studied astronomy in an effort to help them better understand their gods. Ancient civilizations created calendars, cycles, and even built temples that correlated with the movement in space.
The Mayans, Egyptians, Chinese, and the Greeks were just some of the big contributors to the study of astronomy. Astronomy most likely began as a natural curiosity due to the changing positions of the sun, moon, planets, stars, etc. Over time, patterns were noted based on everyday observations of seasonal changes and the rising and setting of the sun. These changes were often aligned with festivals or linked to religious signs. Knowing how and why these ancient civilizations "looked to the stars" will help you better understand how research and theories began for astronomy.
