MACI - Migration Lesson

Migration

Why do people migrate?

The reasons for modern migrations can be very different from the reasons people migrated during ancient times. Today, migrations are sometimes classified as: economic, social, political, or environmental (climate change, natural disaster).

  • economic migration - migrations that occur due to a job shortage.
  • social migration - migrations that occur due to another country or place having a better quality of life. This may also include people who move in order to be closer to family or friends.
  • political migration - migrations that occur due a need to escape political persecution or war.
  • environmental migration - migrations that occur as a result of natural disasters.

Push factors are the reasons why people leave an area. They include:

  • lack of services
  • safety concerns
  • high crime rates
  • food crop failures
  • drought
  • flooding
  • poverty
  • war

Pull factors are the reasons why people move to a particular area. They include:

  • more jobs or better jobs
  • more wealth
  • better healthcare
  • good or better climate
  • safer, less crime
  • political stability
  • more fertile land
  • lower risk from natural hazards

Migration usually happens as a result of a combination of these push and pull factors.
