Cultura: Formal vs. Informal You

Should I use Tú or Usted in Spanish?
1. Ud. Is an abbreviation of an ancient Spanish phrase meaning, Vuestra Merced, Your Grace, used to address royalty, i.e. kings, queens, etc.
2. In the formal Ud. and Uds. are used to address individuals as a sign of respect. It is close to English’s sir or madam. You should use usted to address strangers, people whom you wish to show respect, an older person who you want to show respect, for example, your friend’s grandfather, an honorable figure of authority, and a public audience, using ustedes.
3. In the informal tú, you, and vosotros, all of you, mainly in Spain, are used to address individuals you know on a first-name basis. It is an informal form of address. You should use tú to address friends, children, classmates, family, pets, and in general anyone who addresses you using you.

Me puedes tutear, if you are not sure, you can always start with usted and if you feel comfortable, switch to tú. If the person you are talking to replies, tutéame por favor, or me puedes tutuear, means you can go ahead and use tú, tutear equals to address using the familiar tú form.
