Idiomatic Expressions

What are idioms? An idiom (also called idiomatic expression) is an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning conventionally understood by native speakers. This meaning is different from the literal meaning of the idiom's individual elements. In other words, idioms don't mean exactly what the words say. They have, however, hidden meanings.

Examples

  • "break a leg"
  • "spill the beans"

The meaning of these expressions is different from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which they are made. Their meaning is however used figuratively. They mean respectively:

  • The expression "break a leg" means "good luck"
  • The expression "spill the beans" means "to tell a secret"

Spanish Idiomatic Expressions with the Verb "Tener"

Explanation: Our example focuses on "tener (to have)" in the present: The expressions below may be used using other tenses.

The verb tener means "to have." It is considered an irregular verb in the present tense as it follows a slightly different conjugation pattern in the "yo" form. It is one of the most frequently used verbs in Spanish, and it helps in the construction of idiomatic expressions (expressions that cannot be translated literally). Thus, to speak and write like a native, you need to know a range of idiomatic expressions. Below is a quick review of tender:

Chart reviewing conjugation of the Spanish verb tener

Simple Uses

Yo tengo un perro. I have a dog.

Ella tiene una hermana. She has a sister

Nosotros tenemos tiempo. We have time.

Watch the following video, "Tener Idiomatic Expressions," and listen to the Spanish pronunciation. All the examples given below are in the "yo" form of the verb tener.

Please complete the activity below. *Hint - "very" in the English phrases below would be "mucho" in Spanish since the expressions use a noun. Think... "I have a lot of hunger" (I am very hungry), or "We have a lot of heat" (to be very hot).
