Vocabulario

This chapter's vocabulary uses words associated with weekend activities. Some of this vocabulary may even be familiar! It is highly recommended that you make a vocabulary list of the terms from both sections as well since you will be using them for projects and as a study guide for your chapter test.

Yo voy a salir con mis amigos: I am going out with my friends.

trabajar: to work

quedarme en casa: to stay at home

¿Dónde?: Where?

¿Para hacer qué?: to do what?

la ciudad: city

ir de compras en las tiendas: to go shopping at the stores

comprar un disco compacto nuevo: to buy a new compact disc

el cine: cinema / theater

ver una película: to see a film / movie

el café: café (restaurant) / coffee (drink)

encontrar a mis amigos: to find my friends

el estadio: stadium

asistir a un partido de fútbol: to attend a soccer game

asistir a un concierto: to attend a concert

la piscina: swimming pool

nadar: to swim

la playa: beach

tomar el sol: to sunbathe / to take in the sun

tomar una siesta: to take a nap

ayudar en casa: to help at home

lavar el carro: to wash the car

limpiar el garaje: to clean the garage

arreglar el cuarto: to clean the room

Cultura

Weekends in Spanish-speaking countries are very family-oriented. Sunday evenings it is very common for entire families to go on a walk together in a park or walk around their towns. This is known in some countries as "dar un paseo." The term for a three or four-day weekend in some Spanish-speaking countries is "Puente" (bridge) or simply "fin de semana largo."

el fin de semana en el campo: the weekend in the country (rural)

¿Adónde van este fin de semana?: Where are you all going this weekend?

Nosotros vamos a pasar el fin de semana en el campo: We are going for a walk in the country this weekend.

hacer un picnic: to go on a picnic

dar un paseo: to go for a walk

caminar: to walk

subir (las montañas): to climb (the mountains)

ir de pesca/pescar: to go fishing / to fish

Vamos a salir el sábado por la mañana y regresar el domingo por la noche: We are leaving Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening.

la granja: farm

la pradera: meadow

el campo: country (rural area)

la planta: plant

la flor/las flores: flower / flowers

la vaca: cow

el cerdo: hog

el conejo: rabbit

el pato: duck

la gallina: hen

el caballo: horse

el bosque: forest

el árbol: tree

el río: river

el lago: lake

la hoja: leaf

el pez / los peces: fish / fishes

la ardilla: squirrel

el pájaro: bird
