Lectura: Día de los Muertos
In Mexico, the memories of loved ones who have passed away do not fade with the passage of time. In fact, there are special days at the end of October and the beginning of November that allow the living to honor those who have passed away and offer an opportunity for the souls who have passed to revisit their loved ones.
As per David de la Torre, curator of the Mexican Museum in San Francisco: "Catrina has come to symbolize not only El Día de los Muertos and the Mexican willingness to laugh at death itself, but originally catrina was an elegant or well-dressed woman, so it refers to rich people," de la Torre said. "Death brings this neutralizing force; everyone is equal in the end. Sometimes people have to be reminded."
