Vocabulario

This chapter's vocabulary uses words associated with family members and professions. It is highly recommended that you make a vocabulary list of the terms for both sections since you will be using them for small projects and as a study guide for your chapter test.

La Familia Vocabulario

We are going to begin this chapter by learning basic vocabulary terms that relate to family members. Listen to the pronunciation. It is highly recommended that you make a vocabulary list of the terms as well as you will be using them for small projects and as a study guide for your module test. Please use an online dictionary or a personal Spanish dictionary for any terms not defined in this section. Again, make sure to listen to the audio, repeating the words to help you with your pronunciation.

el abuelo: grandfather

la abuela: grandmother

el nieto: grandson

la nieta: granddaughter

el padre: father

la madre: mother

el hijo: son

la hija: daughter

los hermanos: brothers, sibilings

las hermanas: sisters

la tía: aunt

el tío: uncle

el sobrino: nephew

la sobrina: niece

la prima: cousin (f)

el primo: cousin (m)

la hija única: only daughter

el hijo único: only son, only child

soltero: single (m)

soltera: single (f)

el esposo: husband

la esposa: wife

divorciado: divorced (m)

divorciada: divorced (f)

el padrastro: step-father

la madrastra: step-mother

el hermanastro: step-brother

la hermanastra: step-sister

La abuela es mayor que su nieta: The grandmother is older than her granddaughter.

La nieta es menor que su abuela: The granddaughter is younger than her grandmother.

El nieto es menor que su abuelo: The grandson is younger than his grandfather.

El abuelo es mayor que su nieto: The grandfather is older than his grandson.

las personas: persons

una persona: a person, one person

la gente: people

el cuñado: brother-in-law

la cuñada: sister-in-law

el medio-hermano: half-brother

la media-hermana: half-sister

** The words una persona and la gente are always feminine, even when talking about males.

Our second section of vocabulary consists of professions. View the vocabulary below. These words are mostly cognates, meaning they look very similar to their English meaning. Make sure to listen to the audio as well, repeating the words to help you with your pronunciation.
